Lean 101 Can Transform a Business

Lean methodologies are most often applied to manufacturing settings, but virtually every type of business can benefit from incorporating lean practices into their operations. New Mexico MEP offers an introduction to “lean” practices at its Lean 101 Workshop, held monthly in Albuquerque.

Lean 101 training is a foundational introduction to the tools, methodologies, and principles of eliminating waste and improving processes while enhancing customer value. The practice breaks down processes and flow in business settings to identify where wasteful steps add time and misuse energy. In a manufacturing setting, it could mean changing the factory floor layout or adjusting inventory management. In an office, it can be applied to paperwork and customer service practices. In all cases, lean training gives participants an understanding of how to identify and implement process improvements.

New Mexico Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) works with many types of businesses — not just those in the manufacturing industry. Its workshops take a hands-on approach that creates teamwork and improves problem-solving skills. Participants learn about Value Stream Mapping and tools such as Kanban that help businesses manage inventory, whether they are manufacturing parts, providing pharmaceuticals, or managing people.

Business that have participated in the training report:

  • Increased efficiency through the elimination of waste and streamlining processes
  • Improved quality through a focus on continuous improvement and defect reduction
  • Reduced costs by optimizing processes
  • Enhanced customer satisfaction through the improved delivery of value

The all-day workshops are held at New Mexico MEP’s Albuquerque Center located at 8600 San Mateo Boulevard NE. Workshops typically fill up a month in advance.
