Crowdfunding for Beginners

Crowdfunding started as a way for entrepreneurs to raise business capital in exchange for a small equity position in the business. Now a widely accepted method of raising money, crowdfunding has gone well beyond ownership in exchange for money. A free webinar on March 18 aims to offer insight into the possibilities.

While online platforms continue to be the typical place for exchanges, investors (those providing the cash) might receive a new product or other reward. Or they might not receive anything tangible, but instead get the good feeling of having contributed to something that furthers a mission or belief they hold dear. A loan can also be crowdfunded, providing investors with an interest-bearing investment that will be collected at some time in the future.

This is how the Kiva platform was used to fund a movie. Other platforms include Indiegogo and Kickstarter.

Each type of crowdfunding has advantages and disadvantages. To help make sense of the rules and options, The New Mexico Angels and the City of Albuquerque are hosting a Zoom workshop about crowdfunding at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The presentation aims to equip aspiring entrepreneurs and individuals interested in startup funding with a comprehensive understanding of this increasingly popular financing approach.
