When students from University High and Early College High\nschools toured Roswell manufacturer AerSale in October 2019, it was the first\ntime many of them had seen an Airbus jetliner, let alone boarded an aircraft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students viewed the jet\u2019s cockpit, talked with maintenance professionals\nand learned about careers in the aviation industry, including high-paying jobs\nthen available at AerSale, which specializes in the sale, lease and exchange of\nused aircraft, engines and components and offers a broad range of engineering\nservices to commercial aircraft companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students\u2019 visit was part of Manufacturing Day, a\nmonthlong national effort to introduce teenagers and young adults to careers in\nmanufacturing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The annual event continues this October, but without the\nin-person facility tours that have historically been the heart of Manufacturing\nDay activities. Because the ongoing coronavirus pandemic makes such large-group\nactivities risky, involvement this year will be virtual \u2014 through the social\ndistance of cyberspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participating New Mexico manufacturers have created short,\ninformative videos that focus on the skills and aptitudes required in modern\nmanufacturing and dispel the misconception that manufacturing involves\nrepetitive, unskilled tasks performed in dark, dingy factories. These videos\nwill be released throughout the month on a variety of youth-friendly web-based\nplatforms, including Facebook and YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manufacturing Day events aim to excite young people about\nengineering, design and production jobs carried out in exciting and innovative\nenvironments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These jobs will be an integral part of COVID-19 economic\nrecovery efforts, including in rural areas, according to organizations such as\nForward Cities and the Urban Manufacturing Alliance. These groups are advocating\nplace-based strategies that include converting commercial properties to\nmultitenant manufacturing centers, maker spaces that activate youth pipelines\nfor business development, and community-embedded workforce development\nprograms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One barrier to manufacturing growth is awareness, according\nto Erica Staley of the Manufacturing Renaissance of Chicago. Organizers of\nManufacturing Day 2020 in New Mexico believe they can clear that hurdle this\nyear with the video outreach and expose even more people to manufacturing than\nthey could through limited-space facility tours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statewide events are sponsored by New Mexico Manufacturing\nExtension Partnership (New Mexico MEP), a nonprofit organization that offers\nmanufacturers training and expertise in efficient production and administrative\npractices that allow them to transform their operations and maximize their\ncompetitive edge. This is the eighth year New Mexico MEP has sponsored the\ninitiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, 25 companies in 13 New Mexico communities hosted\ntours, and 13 proclamations were issued by mayors and the governor. Legislators\nand other decision makers joined the activities, and students saw designs\nturned into products and products repurposed into other products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Video events are hosted at http:\/\/newmexicomep.org\/mfgday<\/a>, where\neach company has its own page. A link to available jobs will be provided if the\ncompany has openings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participation is open to all manufacturers in New Mexico, including food and beverage producers, manufacturers of solar and medical devices, and craft artisans. Manufacturers interested in participating can send an email to mfgday@newmexicomep.org<\/a>. New Mexico MEP will send tips and guidelines, along with a participation invitation, to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
